On our 4-H Birdwatchers walk this morning, in Caliente, Hayden (the one at right) saw this tiny nest in a tree, after the mama hummingbird had been buzzing us. Don't know if there were any occupants, but I would guess there are since she was so insistent upon drawing our attention away from that branch!
Hayden must have a sharp eye! I did not realize how tiny the nests were until one appeared outside my office window. Seems I read somewhere the nests are built very uniquely to expand a bit. I was also amazed to learn hummers are unique to the Americas.
@ Randal - yes, and that nest was in use again this spring! @ Jim - yes, he does have sharp eyes! This nest was about 2 ft. above my head, and about a foot off the walking path - it was a challenge to get the photo!

ReplyDeleteNice! Do you remember the hummingbird nest on the power cord for the lift at Caliente PO? Resourceful little critters.
