What makes the swirly indentations? An insect under the bark?I love the texture of wood. It's visually tactile.
It is the larvae of bark beetles; they tunnel along between the inner cambium layer and the outer bark, munching the cambium as they go. Woodpeckers can hear their gnawing, and peck the bark to get at the larvae, which they relish!
