B&W appropriate?

To me it is a difficult decision if a photo looks good in black & white. However, certainly a lot easier nowadays whereas one doesn't have to load a different film (do you remember Plus X and Tri X?) into the camera. In fact, even more simple, as one can shoot everything in color, then convert on the computer. LOVE digital photography!
Took these a couple of days ago, and it gave me a good excuse to go exploring.

  1. Very nice, Jim!! Was this the Delamar cemetary? my fave is the bottom one, with the silhouettes of the grave markers seen against the sky/mountains.

  2. Yes, the southern (and not so well known) Delamar cemetery. Since I originally photographed it in 1971, has suffered some wear and tear, but to be expected. It is my understanding there were originally three, the third being a Chinese, but unable to locate a reference to the location. Seems the Chinese belief is their deceased must ultimately return to the homeland to rest in peace. Hence, they were probably all exhumed.

  3. The one along the main road to Delamar is actually the cemetery for Helene ghost town; the Chinese cemetery was somewhere in the canyon below "chinatown". From 2003 to 2008, I was the Site Steward for Delamar and its cemetery. Liz Russell (my partner) and I mapped out the markers in your photos - and she photo-documented every single grave or suspected grave. A new Site Steward took over the site from Liz and me in 2009; now I monitor the Charcoal Ovens near Panaca Summit (as a volunteer for BLM).

  4. What does the Site Steward job entail? Sounds interesting. I first visited Delamar in the mid-60's. Do you rememeber the wall with the arch in it? I observed some kids methodically tearing it down, but what could I say, the parents were watching them with indifference. In my younger and more foolish years, also spent considerable time underground. Someplace I have the tunnel maps. Fascinating!

  5. Let me post that to you separately, Jim. Yes, I do remember the wall with the arch, I photographed in several times. That is the problem with historic sites - there is always some bozo that is trying to tear them down....
