I know the topic is soooo open to interpretation, but to me "zen" is embodied in the second shot more than the first. I am still trying to find "my zen."
I have no Zen so this one is going to be a hard one. I am the exact opposite of Zen. From a photographic point of view, I like your second shot. The contract between the deep blue in the water and the browns in the wood is great. Did you plan the red on red in the first one?

No, i didn't plan the red on red. just saw it and grabbed my camera. When i think of zen, i think peaceful or meditation or solitude.
