My Dad

My Bottle Baby

I don't think I will ever get Bry to give up her bottle!

Reading... With two hands of course:-)

Sometimes I have to hold my book with one hand, but preferably I use both!

Hands painting porcelain

This photo was taken in Kislovodsk, Russia during my first trip in 2002. Was given a personal tour of a porcelain maker's facility. This young lady and 6 or so others hand paint all pieces. Yes, purchased a tea set on this and subsequent visits. The wife's goal - a set to pass on to every kid. Sounds good to me, as I would love to return.

Get a life!

Every think about how our species is so lucky to have opposable thumbs as a function of our hands? Only a few lifeforms on Earth have this, some of which are extinct. A few dinosaurs - believe it or not.

I was going to edit out all the people but I figured Disneyland is all about having tons of people between you and that magical shot so I left them.

Film is Not Dead!

Had an interesting encounter with a Best Buy sales associate yesterday. The conversation turned to photography, and it evolved this person was a diehard film camera person. His allegation was film cameras take superior photos, and he loved shooting rapid-fire sequences at 6 fps to capture possibly one good shot out of many in an action series. Can one even imagine the expense, compared to digital, of using film nowadays? No, he did not work in the camera department!

Lights on the side of the "Grove Hotel". We were stopped at a red light when I took the picture, the light turned green before the shudder closed and we had to move. Wasn't planning on them streaking like this, but thought it turned out cool.

Boise Capital Building. Was excited how this one turned out. My first few shots were terrible! This caught the street light's glow on the trees.

Bogus Basin Ski Resort. Loved how this turned out. It was freezing cold!

Polarizer filter

Question for the group. Is there value in a polarizing filter, especially for landscapes? Just doing a bit of reading, and it appears the positive effects of a polarizer cannot be duplicated with software, as with some other filter types. Is this true? However, as I have come to find out, good circular polarizers are far from cheap, and the inexpensive brands are iffy at best.

Playing with Light

I saw someone else do this and wanted to try it myself. Can't wait until I can try in a big open area.

f/8.0 iso 100 8 second exposure

f/9.0 iso 100 10 second exposure

Chandeliers and Candles....

A Reflective Rainbow

I've been out of town and just got back, so these are my few attempts at night lights.  This one is a chandelier in the convention center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

White Kryptonite

Another chandelier in our motel in Oklahoma.  It was night-time, but since we didn't get out much after dark I had to settle for indoor lighting.

Firelight

This isn't a very sharp image, because it is actually the side of a silver serving picture with a candle's reflection on it.

Driving to Vegas...

Wiggin' Out

Copy Cattin'

While none of these are very great or very high-tech, they were a lot of fun in the end.  I really liked how the reflection caught on the hood of the car we were driving and copied the line of the lights.

Objects in the Rearview Mirror.....

Tried and tried again to replicate this but couldn't get it with the right lighting again.  Kind of liked how it turned out, though.

you tube laugh break

I was looking around on youtube and came across this. I thought some of the photos were funny. Was good for a laugh if nothing else.

More Night Views of Panaca

I wasn't intending to post these but where this assignment is a little slow...I'll post these until I can get out of town to do some more. This top one, I used a corner garbage can for my tripod and left the shutter open for a few seconds.

Panaca at Night

Fiery Skies

These were taken in July, 2005, when the smoke from all the fires turned our sunrise and sunsets so RED!

August Lightning

Sitting on my back deck with the 35 mm camera at "bulb" setting, just waiting for lightning to happen. I took 2-1/2 rolls of film this one evening, and a few came out okay.

Moonrise Over Court Rock

Another one with my 35 mm (film) camera, from 2006.

Moondog

This was with my 35 mm camera, telephoto lens used, settings?? Taken in 2002, I don't remember all that.

Shooting the Moon

Has anybody attempted photographing the moon? Played around with this a bit last (cold!) night, but with little luck. With a 400mm lens the moon is still a fairly small object in the viewscreen, so used manual settings. As basically a sunlit object, after a bit of experimenting, the exposure came out fairly close at 1/125, f:5.6, and ISO 400. However, could only manage a relatively fuzzy photo, even with a tripod and cable release. Does the moon move fast enough to cause blurring? Atmospherics? Does one need a high ISO and fast shutter speed? What am I doing wrong?

Lights

This was 3 images combined ranging from 2.5 to 8 second exposure. Taken at f/16. Combined using hdr software photomatix.

Single exposure of 10 seconds. ISO 100 and f/16 .

Five second exposure from freeway overpass. f/6.3

Speed of Light

I took these pictures while parked on the side of I-15 just outside of Las Vegas. I forgot to bring my tripod with me so the first one was taken braced against the side of my car, trying to hold as still as possible. The second two were taken at the back of my car with the wind of the passing cars blowing me every which way. I was experimenting with moving light and exposure times. (The only changes made in editing was cropping.)
