Shooting the Moon

Has anybody attempted photographing the moon? Played around with this a bit last (cold!) night, but with little luck. With a 400mm lens the moon is still a fairly small object in the viewscreen, so used manual settings. As basically a sunlit object, after a bit of experimenting, the exposure came out fairly close at 1/125, f:5.6, and ISO 400. However, could only manage a relatively fuzzy photo, even with a tripod and cable release. Does the moon move fast enough to cause blurring? Atmospherics? Does one need a high ISO and fast shutter speed? What am I doing wrong?

  1. I have been able to shoot the moon with my 35 mm camera, hand-held, even with a telephoto lens. On a tripod, it doesn't move fast enough to blur, if you have about a 5 to 10-second exposure. My best shots were always moon-rise or moon-set, rather than overhead shots.

  3. Thanks Barb. Yes, was attempting an overhead. On the POTN forum I see where some are getting good photos, even with the craters sharp.
