This photo was taken in Kislovodsk, Russia during my first trip in 2002. Was given a personal tour of a porcelain maker's facility. This young lady and 6 or so others hand paint all pieces. Yes, purchased a tea set on this and subsequent visits. The wife's goal - a set to pass on to every kid. Sounds good to me, as I would love to return.

Oh, I am envious! The Russian ladies do such wonderful painting, and I love seeing the teapot in her hands! Ummm, would you adopt me so I can get a Russian tea set, too??
ReplyDeleteOnly if you pay the airfare! Ha Ha! You will be jealous, but the first tea set was less than $100. Much more now...
ReplyDeleteAnd... How much do these girls get paid to paint them? This amazes me! Very cool!
ReplyDeleteThey get paid "pennies on the dollar"... at one Painting Convention, there was a Russian vendor, with lots of beautiful Zhostova style (my fave) trays, pins, and pretties. I think I paid less than $50 for 3 large trays and 6 pins! This is a beautiful memory, Jim!
ReplyDeleteBarb is correct. A good month's pay may be $150, for instance Jessies father as a professional firefighter. These girls are probably not nearly getting that much. Monthly pensions for the retired are typically less than $100. However, doesn't cost much to live in rural Russia. But, in contrast, Moscow is rated the most expensive city in the world to live in. And, yes Barb, my trips to Russia and photographs will always be treasured memories.
